Italian athlete celebrates Olympic gold with viral kiss

A video of Italian judoka Alice Bellandi kissing her girlfriend after winning the gold medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics has gone viral on social media – and has become an LGBT+ icon. Bellandi, who had already won the silver medal at the World Championships, defeated Israel’s Inbar Lanir in the 78kg category on Thursday, August 1, to add the Olympic title to her resume.

The final fight was decided when Lanir, a former world champion, committed her third minor penalty, giving Bellandi the victory with a score of 1-0, as reported by the Olympics website. After the victory, the Olympic champion ran to meet her girlfriend, South African judoka Jasmine Martin.

The scene was shared widely online, with many praising the couple for showing their love in such an open and honest way. One user commented: “The most beautiful image today. It was needed.” The public gesture of affection was a particular highlight of Bellandi’s celebration, reflecting inclusion and diversity in sport.
