Directed by Leslye Headland, The Acolyte promises an inclusive and diverse approach to the Star Wars universe, exploring queer content and expanding representation
Historically, the Star Wars franchise has been criticized for its lack of diversity and inclusion. In recent years, however, there has been a growing effort to make the galaxy more representative. The Acolyte appears to be at the forefront of this change, with Headland emphasizing the importance of telling stories that reflect the diversity of the audience.
In his own words, Headland stated: “I really wanted to do a show that was, like, Star Wars from my point of view. And the reason I started with that point of view is because that’s what got me into Star Wars.”
After receiving criticism from fans who questioned the director’s narrative choice, Headland defended her vision, stating that she did not make the series just to be read as queer. “Honestly, it makes me sad that people think that if something was gay, that would be bad,” Headland said. “It makes me sad that a lot of people on the internet have somehow dismantled what I consider to be the most important work of art I have ever made.”
