“The History of Sound” has its release postponed to 2025

New queer historical drama starring Paul Mescal and Josh O’Connor is not expected to hit theaters until late 2025

Fans of Paul Mescal and Josh O’Connor will have to wait longer than expected to watch the new queer historical romance drama, “The History of Sound.” The release date was postponed, leaving many disappointed.

O’Connor is best known for his role as Prince Charles on “The Crown”
Josh O’Connor, recently seen in “Challengers”, will play David, a man who lived through the First World War. His life changes profoundly when he meets Lionel, played by Paul Mescal, star of Gladiators. The film will be directed by Oliver Hermanus, who recently worked on three episodes of Nicholas Galitzine’s gay historical drama “Mary & George.”

Hermanus revealed to AwardsWatch that the film, initially slated for the 2024 Venice Film Festival, will not be ready in time. He expects “The History of Sound” to premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in May 2025, with a theatrical release slated for the end of the same year.

Mescal also played a gay character in Andrew Haigh’s moving novel
This news is especially frustrating for fans, as the drama was first announced in 2021 and has already suffered multiple delays. O’Connor and Mescal were seen filming the film earlier this year, both wearing hats, shirts, ties and vests. At the time, Hermanus commented that the actors were “on fire” during filming.

O’Connor is best known for his role as Prince Charles in “The Crown”, but has also excelled in LGBT+ roles, including “Challengers”, “God’s Own Country”, and a role in “Peaky Blinders”. Mescal also played a gay character in Andrew Haigh’s moving novel “All of Us Strangers” earlier this year.
