“The Boyfriend” is a new show that promises an intimate look at gay life in Japan
“Located by the sea, the ‘Green Room’ beach house sets the stage for nine men to find love,” the official description reads. “For a month, they live together and take turns working on a mint green coffee truck, building deep friendships and learning about themselves along the way.”
Although the trailer does not reveal the identities of the nine participants, they are seen in various locations, such as beaches, cafes and nightclubs, often shirtless. While some are focused on the dating aspect, one of the men in the trailer wonders, “Why was I born this way?” The show promises to offer an intimate and authentic look at gay life in Japan.
Executive producer Dai Ota, live-action originals manager at Netflix Japan, explained in a statement that the show’s initial goal was not just romance. “We started by wanting to highlight the friendships and personalities of young people. Our focus was not just on romance, but also on spending time together and experiencing personal growth.”
Producer and chief director Keisuke Hishida added, “I discussed with the cast how growth and valuable experiences result from shared friendships, youth and struggles, not just romance. This led to many unexpected miracles on set.”
The trailer quickly went viral on social media, generating a series of positive reactions. One comment on X said, “I hope all this LGBTQ+-related Japanese content makes people realize how important it is to have same-sex marriage in Japan.” Another comment, more cryptically, said: “Cancer season…”.
“The Boyfriend” premieres July 9, with new episodes released every Tuesday in four weekly installments.
