Nintendo makes historical reparations and rescues trans character

Nintendo made a historic reparation: in 2004, when releasing the first version of “Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door” for the GameCube, the company included among the characters that help the famous plumber the friendly Vivian. In the game, in addition to helping Mario, Vivian vented to him about topics such as acceptance, love and even family transphobia, suffering bullying from her brothers who insisted on calling her “brother”.

The dilemma was addressed in the Japanese version of the game. However, when the English edition was released, fans noticed that Vivian’s dialogue had been removed. The character was still in the game, but not her fight. Nintendo, fearing a negative reaction in Europe and the United States, decided to censor this dialogue.

Now, twenty years later, the company is re-releasing “Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door” with improved graphics and sound for the Nintendo Switch. The news that Vivian’s full story would be present in the relaunch came from platform users who played the final version before its release.

As soon as older fans noticed the return of the original dialogues, a celebration took over social media, praising Nintendo for the initiative. Vivian’s story, contrary to what the company feared 20 years ago, was widely applauded by many.
