Paraíso do Tuiuti shows the synopsis “Who is afraid of Xica Manicongo?”, by carnival artist Jack Vasconcelos
This Monday, May 13th, at 7pm, Paraíso do Tuiuti, in Rio de Janeiro, will present the synopsis of the plot “Who is afraid of Xica Manicongo?”, by carnival artist Jack Vasconcelos, for Carnival 2025. The reading It will be during the “Tutu de Preto Velho” event, traditional at the São Cristóvão association.
In addition to the presentation of the plot, the school segments will perform and there will be a samba circle with T do Tuiuti. Entry will be free.
Jack Vasconcelos highlights: “Xica Manicongo was the first non-indigenous transvestite in Brazil. Brought kidnapped from the Congo region, belonging to the quimbanda category of her people, her gender expression was read by the colonizer as feminine. Xica represents the fight of Brazilian transvestites for the right to memory and recognition and that is why it is important to honor her fight and existence.”
Considered the first transvestite in Brazil, Xica was an enslaved person who lived in Salvador and worked as a shoemaker in Cidade Baixa, according to records of official documents archived in Lisbon, Portugal.
His surname, Manicongo, was a title used by rulers in the Kingdom of Congo to refer to their lords and their deities. In this way, we can then translate her name as “Queen or Royalty of the Congo”.
