“I know in my heart that this is just the beginning of a new phase for me and I hope to continue to inspire others to stay strong, put their mental health first, advocate for themselves and others with their voice, and don’t be afraid of what the future holds, even if it seems uncertain.
A spokesperson for the Miss USA organization told CNN that they support Voigt’s decision to step back from her duties and that “the welfare of the titleholder is a top priority and we understand that she has to come first at this time.”
The organization also said it will reconsider plans to hand over the duties to a successor and that it will announce a new Miss USA soon.
Hawaii’s Savannah Gankiewicz took first runner-up after Voigt’s win in November, making her a potential candidate for the new Miss USA crown.
