Organization report records 21 cases of sexual violence in conflicts around the planet last year
The United Nations warns of a “dramatic increase” of 50% in cases of sexual violence in conflicts in 2023 compared to the previous year – and identified 21 episodes that targeted lesbians, gays, bisexuals, transsexuals, queer and intersex people. The data was presented at the end of April at the Security Council by the Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Sexual Violence in Conflict.
Pramila Patten highlighted that weapons continue to flow into the hands of the perpetrators of these crimes and that the majority of victims remain without access to reparation measures. Around 95% of cases involved women and girls. In 32% of situations the victims were children.
For the first time, the report contains a section dedicated to Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territories. Following the October 7 attacks led by Hamas against Israel, the government invited the rapporteur to visit the country.
The assessment highlighted that the acts may still be occurring. It also documents how sexual violence has restricted women’s access to livelihoods and girls’ access to education in a global context of record levels of displacement.
