Bill being processed in the Chamber of Deputies – but stopped since October 2022 – wants the Executive Branch to prepare statistics on the violence that affects the LGBT + population and the black population, including black and brown people, according to the classification proposed by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE).
The proposal also indicates that the methodology used must follow a single standard for data collection and tabulation. The data collected must be centralized and made available for access by any citizen.
In the Justification, the deputy recalls that “violence against gays, transvestites and trans women, between 20 and 39 years old, increased in Brazil in 2021. With 316 victims, a dossier points to a 33% increase in the number of violent deaths among the LGBTQIA population +”.
He also highlights that “we have evidence to assume that this data is still underreported in Brazil. After all, the absence of government data and the use of information available in the media point to a methodological limitation of research”.
Nelto considers “it is extremely important that this proposal is implemented, so that it can be verified about the rates of violence, and correlate it with the reasons that influence this”. The PL was presented on September 8th to the Board of Directors and is awaiting forwarding.
