On December 13th, the same Municipal Legislature had rejected the honor for the teacher
The Recife City Council approved, on the 29th, granting the title of citizen of Recife to trans teacher Dayanna Louise, in a decision that comes four months after a previous controversy: on December 13th of last year, the same Municipal Legislature had rejected the honor for the teacher.
Dayanna is from Carpina, in Mata Norte, and is currently studying for a doctorate in education. The Legislative Decree Project (PDL) that gave rise to the title was proposed by councilor Ivan Moraes (PSOL). The vote resulted in 29 votes in favor and two against, these from Alcides Cardoso (PL) and Felipe Alecrim (Novo).
Last year, the project received 20 votes in favor and just five against, but a minimum of 24 votes in favor was required. On that occasion, 14 councilors abstained from voting.
“It was an important day, as we managed to overcome an embarrassment we experienced at the end of last year. The title of citizen was finally approved for Dayanna Louise dos Santos, a rocky educator, a fantastic person, who really deserves to have this commendation given by Casa de José Mariano”, said Ivan Moraes.
During the rejection of the title, Moraes requested the revocation of the mandate of his colleague Michele Collins (PP), alleging that she committed a “crime of transphobia” after a speech in the Chamber plenary against the granting of the title of Recife citizen to professor Dayanna Louise.
In a statement, councilor Michele Collins stated that “at no time did she offend, disrespect or not value the resume of the person who was in the project.” She added that “only and solely, the discussion was regimented.”
Also in December last year, the professor stated that the “rejection of the title of citizen of Recife represents an affront to the rights of the trans and transvestite population by fundamentalist sectors that aim to obtain political capital through the propagation of fallacious speeches”.
