The Queen of the Desert is back and with an original cast, director Stephen Elliott announced
Thirty years after its debut in 1994, “Priscilla, Queen of the Desert” is ready for a sequel. This classic from the queer pantheon, directed by Stephen Elliott, continues to push boundaries and paved the way for the global phenomenon of RuPaul’s Drag Race to popularize the world of drag beyond LGBT+ borders.
Now, with director Stephen Elliott’s announcement of the sequel, the original cast, including Hugo Weaving, Guy Pearce and Terence Stamp, are set to reprise their roles. Elliott, in an interview with The Guardian Australia, expressed his enthusiasm, stating that it is the perfect time to make the film, especially given current social tensions.
The plot of “Priscilla” follows two drag queens and a trans woman on a journey through the Australian desert towards a drag show. The film celebrates LGBT+ friendship and diversity, featuring self-deprecating humor and communal jokes that make you laugh along with the characters.
The original film won awards for Best Costume Design at the Oscars and Best Makeup and Hairstyling at the Baftas, but Elliott is determined to move beyond these superficial aspects. He promises an extravagant sequel, full of humor and a message of tolerance, stating that it won’t just be “breasts and feathers”, but something more meaningful and relevant to current times.
