The film “20 days in Mariupol” won the “Best Feature Documentary Film” category.
Director Mstislav Chernov responded to the decision of the Oscar organizers to cut a fragment of the award ceremony for the film “20 Days in Mariupol” from the shortened version of international television. He said this in an interview on the YouTube channel “Stratcom Armed Forces of Ukraine”.
According to him, he sees no “betrayal,” but still needs to understand this situation.
“The fact that today my speech and our category were cut into shortened versions, I know, we have now sent a request and are waiting for a response. Honestly, I don’t think there is any “betrayal” here, but we need to figure it. Because usually these television versions are planned in advance, before the ceremony. For me, we just have to wait for an official response, because I see that there are already requests from both. Suspilny and Ukrainian which are politicians. It’s ironic, but about our category they started talking about my speech more,” said Chernov.
He also explained why a documentary about Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny won an Oscar last year. The director noted that the film was shot by documentary director Daniel Roher and is positioned as anti-war.
“First, it’s a film by a Canadian director. It’s not a Russian film. And it was never noticed in Hollywood or in the political arena in Europe and America as a Russian film. This helped him achieve success. Second , it was presented as anti-Putin and anti-war by the time his promotional campaign opened. Then Russia attacked Ukraine, the war was already going on, but then there were almost no Ukrainian documentaries to talk about this new wave of aggression. And so film critics chose to support the film about Navalny, because he is the loudest and has the support of CNN and politicians,” concluded the director.
Earlier it was reported that the American Film Academy will re-release the international televised version of the Oscars, where the awarding moment of the Ukrainian documentary 20 days in Mariupol was cut.
