Ibrahim, the head of Johor state, took the oath of office at the royal palace in a ceremony witnessed by members of the rest of the royal family, the prime minister and cabinet ministers.
Malaysia’s new king was sworn in at a ceremony at the National Palace in Kuala Lumpur on January 31. Sultan Ibrahim succeeded Al-Sultan Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah. The Daily Mail reported this.
Notably, 65-year-old Sultan Ibrahim Iskandar was sworn in as the country’s new king under the country’s unique rotational monarchy system, which sees the heads of Malaysia’s nine states rotate as monarchs for a five-year term.
Before taking office, he said he intended to be an active monarch and suggested that Malaysia’s state oil company Petroliam Nasional and the country’s anti-corruption agency report directly to the king rather than the prime minister.
He also outlined his plans to revive the stalled high-speed rail project between Malaysia and Singapore.
It should be noted that the king plays a largely ceremonial role in Malaysia, with administrative powers vested in the prime minister and parliament.
However, the monarch is the nominal head of the government and military and is highly regarded as a protector of Islam and Malay traditions.
All laws, the appointment of cabinet ministers and the dissolution of parliament for general elections require his consent, the king has the right to declare a state of emergency and pardon criminals.
As for Ibrahim Iskandar himself, he is known as a collector of unique cars.
He has a fleet of 300 luxury cars, including one “given by Adolf Hitler”, a fleet of private jets and his own army. The Sultan also boasts a property worth around £4.5 billion, but his actual wealth is believed to be much greater.
Ibrahim Raja Zarit’s wife Sofia graduated from Oxford University and was born into another royal family. The couple has six children.
