On this day, the Orthodox Church honors the memory of Hermilus and Stratonicus of Singidon, friends from Singidunum (present-day Belgrade, Serbia). They were condemned by the martyr because of their faith in God.
Ermila is a deacon in Singidunum. He was subjected to terrible torture. But they could not force him to renounce Christ. Because of this, he drowned in the Danube River.
Stratonicus was the keeper of the prison where Ermila was thrown. Seeing the suffering of his prisoner, he could not hold back his tears and also confessed his faith in God, for which he accepted martyrdom.
Traditions and rituals
People called this day Yaremy Day and tried not to hurt pets, especially cats, so as not to lose happiness for seven years. They also forgave all who had sinned.
