Public and church holidays on January 5
The Orthodox Church honors the memory of the ten holy martyrs of Crete: Theodulus, Sathorninus, Euporus, Gelasius, Eunicianus, Zotikos, Pompius, Agathopus, Basilides and Evaristus, as well as the Monk Niphon, Bishop of Cyprus.
Ten martyrs suffered in Crete around 250, during the persecution of the Roman Emperor Decius. They were tortured and humiliated for 30 days, forcing them to reject Christ, but they endured all the torture, praising the Lord.
Because of this, they were all beheaded.
Monk Niphon was born in Paphlagonia (the territory of modern Turkey) and received his education in Constantinople. As a child, he was gentle and kind, often went to church, but in his youth he began to lead a wild life.
A meeting with an old friend forced Niphon to come to his senses, and he began to pray to the Mother of God, asking for protection. Because of this, Nifont was able to escape sin and change completely.
Subsequently, he took monastic vows and continued to struggle with his passions. From the Lord, Niphon received the gift of recognizing the schemes of cunning spirits and defeating them, as well as seeing the departure of souls after death.
In his old age he was appointed bishop of Constantia in Cyprus. However, shortly after his appointment, Niphon died, predicting his death within three days.
Believers consider Nifont a patron against the schemes, inheritance and tricks of evil spirits. They prayed to the saint to ward off evil from people and animals.
Traditions and rituals
People called January 5 Fedulov’s Day and paid great attention to the pets: they were fed, the barn and chicken coop were repaired, and the walls were checked to see if the walls were well insulated.
To ward off evil spirits from the cow, thistle thorns were hung in the room where it was located.
They also baked special bran cakes and cookies in the shape of sheep, cows and birds to attract good spirits. They are fed individually to the animals while still warm.
On this day, the chickens were given grain, standing in front of the fire of the stove for a day.
What not to do on January 5

Women should not be tied at the hem, otherwise their lives will be shortened.
