Town and church holidays
On this day, the Orthodox Church celebrates the memory of one of the most revered saints – Nicholas the Pleasant, or, as he is also called, the Wonderworker.
According to his biography, the monk was born in the 3rd century in the Greek colony of Patare (Asia Minor). From childhood, Nikolai was imbued with the Christian religion and early decided to devote his life to it. The youth spent the whole day in the temple, and at night he prayed and read books. His uncle, Bishop Nicholas of Patarsky, seeing such enthusiasm, made the young man a reader, and then a priest. Nikolai gave all his wealth, inherited from his parents, to charity.
Nicholas later became a bishop in the city of Miri (in modern Turkey). He was a zealous preacher of Christianity. Nicholas is also credited with the destruction of several pagan temples and many miracles that occurred through the power of prayer.
Traditions and rituals
Nicholas has long been considered the defender of the condemned; they believe that he can help the innocent convicted. He is also called the patron saint of sailors, merchants and children. Farmers also prayed to him – for good weather, for a good harvest. “Second patron after God,” they say about the saint.
Signs
-
Frost on trees – to a bountiful harvest next year.
-
What is the weather in the winter of Nicholas, so will be the day of spring (May 9).
-
Sunny and frosty days – expect a bad harvest next year.
-
The snow is blown off the road by the wind – the paths will not stand like that (melting will begin).
