Town and church holidays

On this day, the Orthodox Church honors the memory of St. Philip, one of the 12 apostles – disciples of Jesus Christ. The Gospel of John reports that Philip came from the same city as the apostles Andrew and Peter, and was called to be with them. It is also known that he is married and has daughters. Philip preached the Gospel, accompanying his speeches with miracles. So, one day he resurrected a dead baby, carried in the arms of a restless mother.

On another occasion, at the request of a crowd threatening to stone Philip, he resurrected a dead man being carried on a stretcher. Philip met his death on the cross, killed by pagans for his missionary work.

Traditions and rituals

On Philippov’s Day, the 40-day Nativity Fast begins, which lasts until December 25. In ancient times, on the eve of the fast, people rested to gain strength; it is forbidden to make handicrafts and to carry out construction and repairs. On this day they made large purchases for the winter, taking care that the roads were impassable.

Signs
  • Not all trees have shed their leaves – the winter will be long, and next year will be a poor harvest.
  • It began to rain – the wheat will be harvested next year.
  • A lot of snow has fallen – you should prepare for spring floods.
  • Rivers and lakes are covered with ice – no warming is expected.
  • The roads are slushy – the warm weather will last until mid-winter.
  • The frost is barely noticeable – winter will not come soon.
