Works include hairs covering the surface of a plant leaf, a mouse embryo, and images of cell division.
Nikon’s annual Small World photography competition has announced its winners. The first place was taken by a photo from diabetes researchers from the Australian Lion Eye Institute. Live Science writes about it.
The image of the web-like network of blood vessels behind the mouse’s eye took top honors. The photograph was taken by Hassanain Kambari, who took a detailed picture of a rodent’s optic nerve.
In this way he wanted to show the complexity of the microcirculation of the retina.
To create this complex image, Kambari stitched together hundreds of different images taken using confocal and fluorescence microscopy.
We remind you that the winners of the World Press Photo 2022 competition have been announced earlier.
