On this day, the Orthodox Church honors the memory of Evlampius and Eulampia. They were brothers, born into a rich family in Nicodemus. Evlampius was the first convert to Christianity. When the emperor issued an order to cleanse the city of Christians, he simply laughed and called him mad. The young man was immediately arrested and brought to trial. There he showed himself to be a faithful Christian and steadfastly withstood all tortures.
Sister Evlampia learned of her brother’s suffering and ran to the court. There he also declared himself a Christian, and then added that he was ready to endure all suffering with his brother. The pagans decided to boil the brothers in a pot and burn them in the oven, but they remained unharmed. Then the leader ordered to cut off the young man’s head, and the girl, seeing this, died of grief.
