Town and church holidays on October 5

The Orthodox Church honors the memory of the prophet Jonah and the holy martyr Phokas of Sinope.

The Old Testament prophet Jonah lived in the 8th century BC. He is the oldest of the Jewish prophets whose writings survive to our time, and the only one who “strove to flee from God.”

According to legend, he received an order from God to go to Nineveh, the capital of the Assyrian kingdom, to predict the death of the city and call the inhabitants to repent of their sins. However, Jonah did not want to go to the enemies of the Israelites and boarded a ship to Tarshish.

When the ship was overtaken by a storm, the sailors cast lots to see whose sins brought them punishment, and he pointed to Jonah. The saint confessed his disobedience to God and asked to be thrown into the sea. When he was in the water, the storm stopped.

The Prophet did not drown – he was swallowed by a huge whale, in whose belly he spent three days and three nights. All this time, Jonah prayed and repented before God, then a miracle happened – the whale threw its victim ashore.

As a result, Jonah went to Nineveh and began to preach Christianity there. The inhabitants of the city repented of their sins, and God had mercy on them – the city existed for more than 200 years until it was destroyed in 610 BC.

Prophet Jonah returned to his homeland and died there in peace.

Hieromartyr Phokas was from Sinop. From a young age, he lived a righteous life and had the gift of healing people, for which he was appointed Bishop of Sinope.

During the persecution of Christians under Emperor Trajan, the saint was forced to renounce his faith by torture, and then executed in 117.

People called this day Ioanna and Foka, Deciduous, Listoder, Foka the Gardener.

Traditions and rituals

Strong winds often blow in Fok and Ion, gusts that literally tear the leaves from the trees – the so-called leaf blower began.

Farmers were finishing harvesting radishes, so they were on the table in abundance and served with salt, onions and kvass.

Foku is revered as a protector from fire and rescuer of drowning people. People prayed to the saint for protection.

What not to do on October 5

In memory of Jonah’s stay in the womb of a whale, eating fish is forbidden on this day.

To avoid strong winds, you should not burn old brooms, destroy anthills, curse the wind blower, or hit the ground with a stick or whip.
