Town and church holidays
The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary is the day of the end of the earthly life of the Holy Virgin Mary, the mother of Jesus Christ. According to Christian tradition, this is called dormition, not death. According to the legend of this day, the apostles gathered in Jerusalem for the farewell and burial of the Virgin. It is celebrated as a great festival in the Eastern Christian churches – Orthodox and Catholic churches, as well as in the Armenian Church. According to the Gregorian and New Julian calendars, it is celebrated annually on August 15, according to Julian – on August 15 (28). On the same day, the Roman Catholic Church celebrates the feast of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, events that took place immediately after the Assumption. Another name is First Pure, Assumption.
Traditions and rituals
According to tradition, in the temples on this holiday, the grain of the new harvest is consecrated, as well as fresh bread baked from freshly ground flour. The people of Assumption have a tradition of dozhinki: for the holiday, an uncompressed sheaf is left in the field. A bread baked from flour from this sheaf is considered healing, a piece of it should be tried by everyone, and a part is left in a secluded place – as a charm to prevent hunger and pain
