The World Bank opted to stop financial aid to Unganda after a homophobic law
The World Bank took a major turn on Uganda.
The institution announced that the Anti-Homosexuality Law goes against its principles and values, therefore new public funding for the site until it can ensure that the projects supported in the country do not discriminate against sexual and gender minorities.
In the country, the Anti-Homosexuality Law imposes life imprisonment and the death penalty for cases of aggravated homosexuality, as they define it.
Yoweri MuseveniPresident of Uganda, detonated the institution’s decision and accused the Central Bank of using financial resources to pressure the government.
“It is therefore regrettable that the World Bank and other actors dare to want to coerce us to abandon our faith, culture, principles and sovereignty, using money. They really underestimate all Africans”said the president in a statement.
He also stated that the country will not give in and that Uganda has other sources of income.
After the official statement from the World Bank, the Ugandan Ministry of Health, one of the projects receiving financial aid, reaffirmed the importance of not denying health services to the population. In a statement, they said health professionals should not discriminate against individuals seeking help.
