Town and church holidays

Today is the Memorial Day of St. Theodore the Sanctified, who lived in the 3rd century in Egypt. Theodore Sanctified was the favorite disciple of the Monk Pachomius. Shortly before his death, Pachomius made him head of the Tavenissky monastery, and Theodore later became abbot of the Thebaid monasteries.

Among the people, the Day of Remembrance of St. Theodore the Sanctified is called Fyodor Zhitnik. Zhito is called cereals – barley, wheat, rye, oats – and today is the best day to sow fields with them.

Today Fyodor Zhitnik takes care of the sowing work, so if you want a good harvest, start the day with a prayer to the saint. And for more confidence, so that Fedor can hear you, put a saucer with seeds on the threshold.

On May 29, the mountain ash was definitely blooming. The flowering of mountain ash means the end of frosts and all kinds of spring cold snaps.

Female witches, albulars and healers collected rowan blossom at Fyodor Zhitnik. It is then carefully dried in the shade in a draft, spread on a piece of linen cloth, and poured into linen bags for storage. Then it was used in the preparation of various decoctions and salts.

Signs

  • It began to rain with a storm – to a bountiful harvest

  • The sun rises after the rain – no more cold weather

  • Frogs crow loudly – expect bad weather

  • Rowan bloomed – it will be warm and fishing will be successful
