The son of King Charles III wanted to pay for British police services during his home visits.
Prince Harry has lost a lawsuit over paying for police protection during his family’s visits to the UK. The BBC reported it.
Home Office lawyers are opposed to allowing the wealthy to “buy” security from the police.
In particular, the Duke of Sussex sued the Home Office for removing his taxpayer-funded protection after Meghan Markle stepped down as royal in 2020.
Prince Harry’s lawyers considered this decision unreasonable. Lawyers for the Duke of Sussex argued that there were provisions in the law allowing the payment of “special police services”, and therefore “their payment would not be contrary to the public interest or public confidence in the Metropolitan Police” .
But Home Office lawyers said the type of protection in question, which could mean “specialist officers as security guards”, was not the same as funding extra police at football matches.
A lawyer for the Metropolitan Police argued that it would be foolish to put officers at risk for “funding a private individual”.
It was previously reported that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle said they were caught up in a “nearly disastrous car chase” involving paparazzi in New York.
