Town and church holidays
On this day, the Orthodox Church honors the memory of St. Joseph – the husband of the Virgin Mary, the earthly father and guardian of Jesus Christ. He was born in Bethlehem, Judea, Roman Empire. Descended from a Jewish family from the house of David. Lived in Nazareth, Galilee, worked as a carpenter. He was the bridegroom of Mary, whom he took as his wife after the Annunciation.
According to New Testament tradition, he doubted her when he found out about her pregnancy, but there was a revelation from God’s angel that convinced him not to dissolve the marriage. During the imperial census, he returned with Mary to Bethlehem, where she gave birth to Jesus. Soon after, he was forced to flee to Egypt with his family from the persecution of King Herod, but after a few years he returned to Nazareth.
When Jesus was 12 years old, he went with him and Mary to the Temple in Jerusalem. The exact date of death is unknown.
Saint Joseph is revered by all Christian churches as a saint and a righteous man.
In iconography, he is depicted as a carpenter, with Jesus, lily flowers, doves, etc.
He is the patron of parents, unborn children, workers, carpenters, artisans, Americas, Belgium, Canada, Croatia, Indonesia, Korea, Vietnam.
