Mattel, which owns the Barbie brand, partnered with medical experts to create a Barbie doll with Down syndrome.
American toy company Mattel released the world’s first version of a Barbie doll with Down syndrome. On Tuesday, April 25, CNN reported.
“We are proud to present the Down Syndrome Barbie doll to better capture the diversity of the world around us,” said Vice President Lisa McKnight.
The new Barbie doll model was created in collaboration with the National Down Syndrome Society (NDSS) of the USA.
She has a new face and body sculpture depicting women with a genetic disorder characterized by short stature and an elongated body. The doll’s face is round, with small ears, a flat bridge of the nose and almond-shaped eyes.
Barbie is wearing a pink orthopedic visor that matches her outfit. The doll’s shoes are sneakers with zippers, symbolizing children with Down syndrome, some of whom use orthopedic shields to support their legs.

The puffed-sleeved dress features butterflies, as well as yellow and blue flowers, the symbols and colors of people with Down Syndrome. The pink pendant Barbie is wearing has three copies of chromosome 21, which leads to this syndrome.
The new doll is part of the Barbie Fashionistas line, designed to introduce children to the myriad of human qualities. So, the line already features a doll with a prosthetic leg, a girl with a hearing aid, a Barbie in a wheelchair and a skin disease with vitiligo.
It will be remembered that in 2021 Mattel introduced a collection of Barbies made of ocean debris.
