Hygge is a decoration and living style that originated in Denmark. The model values comfort, warmth and socializing with friends and family. In addition to decorating the interior, applying the hygge style can involve creating a cozy atmosphere at home. Soft lighting, candles, pleasant decorative objects are examples of the style that emphasizes a peaceful atmosphere.
The concept can be applied to any room in a house. “All environments that are designed in terms of comfort, well-being or coexistence will be within the meaning of hygge”, explains architect Everton Sentinello. He checks out some suggestions to apply the style in your home environments.
Room
For the bedroom, as suggested by interior designer Larissa Santo, it is possible to add pillows to the bed, candles on the bedside table, a painting geometric and indirect lighting. “That way, you’ll bring everything you need to relax,” he says.
Living room
In the living room, the professional recommends use pillows of different fabrics on the sofa, a soft blanket, a soft rug, candles and plants. “Trying to use the gray, white, nude and pastel color palette is a great choice,” he adds.
Bathroom
For the bathroom, in addition to candles, the interior designer recommends placing a soft rug and, next to the shower, a branch of rosemary or another plant that releases an aroma. “Don’t forget to pack items that are comfortable and make you happy,” she recommends.
Hygge decoration in Brazil
Brazil has a climate quite different from the Nordic countries. In most parts of the country, for example, winter is not usually so rigorous. But still, it’s totally possible. apply the hygge in residential decoration – as long as some adjustments are made.
According to architect Everton Sentinello, heat is one of the aspects that deserve attention. “Hygge seeks textures to protect against extreme cold, which does not happen in our case. So, here in Brazil, care must be taken not to create a “hot” environment, because, for us, comfort can be in the “fresh”, without losing the pleasure and touch of the materials that hygge prioritizes”, he says.
For the architect Gustavo Pozzato, the concept in Brazilian decoration can be inserted mainly in houses in mountain regions, where temperatures are lower. Still according to the professional, in these cases, you can abuse light wood and white in contrast to items in dark tones.
How to apply hygge in decoration?
To start applying hygge to decoration, architect Everton Sentinello suggests first finding what the Danes call hyggekrog, that is, your favorite place in the house and that gives you a feeling of well-being and warmth. “Find your little corner in the house, where you like to read, contemplate, enjoy the feeling of the natural touch of materials. That way, you can start your hygge construction”, he advises.
Interior designer Larissa Santo recommends starting by valuing the natural light in the house, investing in candles and items that scent the environments and adding natural elements, such as wood, stone, straw and fabric items. “Don’t forget the little plants, they help to make any environment more cozy”, he concludes.
Hiring a specialized professional, for example, can also help you a lot when building your hygge space.
