history of the holiday
The Lord’s Entry into Jerusalem was an event in the life of Jesus Christ. He rode a donkey to the holy city. When the people saw Jesus, they proclaimed the word Hosanna and threw palm branches at his feet, as if meeting the king.
Since there were no palm trees in Ukraine, people replaced them with willows. It is believed that this tree is endowed with healing properties.
Palm Sunday Traditions
Christians dedicate willow branches to the temple. Then they bring them home and put them in a vase, considering them a powerful charm.
They also jokingly hit each other with sacred branches, saying: “I won’t b’yu – willow b’є, it’s Great Day for this day, a red egg is not far away!”.
What not to do on Palm Sunday
