This Tuesday (04), Warner Bros. released the trailer for the movie ‘Barbie’, one of the most anticipated adaptations for 2023. Revealing pieces of the plot and 24 posters detailing each of the characters, the announcement piqued the curiosity of fans and reverberated on social networks.
For being the first live-action of the children’s doll, the doubt about what the feature will approach hangs among the public, since the universe of Barbie offers countless possibilities and the production has kept the script a secret.
So, below, check out 7 curiosities about the film to reduce anxiety while the adaptation is not released!
1. Success in the direction
The production will be directed by Greta Gerwig, director nominated for the oscar for ‘Lady Bird: Time to Fly’ (2017) and ‘Little Women’ (2019). With Lady Bird, she won ‘Best Direction’ by the National Board Of Review, as well as ‘Best Screenplay’ by the Independent Spirit Awards. With ‘Little Women’, the director secured the ‘Best Adapted Screenplay’, by the Critics Choice Awards, and ‘Best Direction’, by the National Society of Critics of the USA.
two. Adaptation thought since 2009
Assumptions about an adaptation of the doll’s animations have been circulating since 2009. Names like Amy Schumer and Anne Hathaway were some of those mentioned for a possible live-action, but the projects did not go forward.
3. Premiere of Dua Lipa at the movies
As many fans already suspected, the singer Dua Lipa was confirmed in the movie’s cast. Through a publication on Instagram, the artist announced her presence in the production and wrote: “This Barbie is a mermaid”, in reference to the poster of the character published by her. In addition, according to a Daily Mail publication, the singer is also quoted to sing the theme song of the film and may make a romantic pair with John Cena, star of WWE (World Wrestling Entertainment).
4. Barbie’s Multiverse
With the images released by the trailer, the public can already see that the production will show different versions of Barbie and Ken. In addition to the classic dolls created by Elliot Handler, and played by Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, there were also other versions played by actresses Issa Rae and Hari Nef and actors Simu Liu and Ncuti Gatwa.
Despite rumors that Warner Bros. would be creating a Barbie multiverse, it seems, the film can take a new approach to the story, showing Barbie having an identity crisis when she realizes that she is not the only version of the doll that exists in the world.
5. Renowned cast
With the list of actors who will be present in the film, the expectation of fans to check out what the production has in store has grown. That’s because the cast is filled with renowned artists who have already participated in major productions, such as:
- Connor Swindells;
- Nicola Coughlan;
- Emma Mackey;
- Scott Evans;
- Kate McKinnon;
- Michael Cera;
- Will Ferrell;
- Ariana Greenblatt;
- American Ferrera;
- Ritu Arya;
6. new approaches
Despite the plot of the film still being a mystery, the recent release of the trailer, and the posters with the characters, indicate that Barbie and Ken will be able to live in the real world. As the film is being released in a contemporary era full of debates, the producers could not ignore some approaches or conduct the theme as before.
Therefore, in this new adventure in real life, Barbie will be able to live with the struggle of women in modern society, dealing with themes such as sexism, machismo, expectations about the gender role and learning that beauty is inside everyone.
7. Release date close to Friend’s Day
As many know, Barbie is surrounded by a huge cycle of friends and, even before adaptation, the approaches around her history have always been related to the power of friendship, which is present in all of his adventures. Therefore, coincidence or not, the film will be released on July 21, nine days before the ‘International Friend’s Day’.
