Town and church holidays

On this day, the Orthodox Church honors the memory of the Martyr Nikon of Sicily, Bishop, and 199 of his disciples, who lived in the 3rd century, and the Monk Nikon of the Caves, hegumen, who lived in the 11th century.

He was born in Naples to a pagan Greek father and a Christian mother. When Nikon grew up, he became a warrior. Once a cross and a prayer saved a person in battle, after which he was baptized and went to a monastery. Later, Nikon became a bishop and had 190 such students. He was also accompanied by nine former fellow soldiers.

The brothers, led by Nikon, settled in Sicily on Mount Tauromenia.

During the persecution of the Christians, the pagans denounced them to the Sicilian hegemon Quintian. Because Nikon and his disciples refused to renounce their faith, they became martyrs.

Monk Nikon of the Caves was the first disciple and companion of the founder of the Kiev-Pechersk monastery Anthony. For tonsuring the favorites of the Grand Duke Izyaslav (St. Varlaam and Ephraim), he incurred his wrath, but refused to persuade the tonsured to leave the monastery.

Later, Nikon retired to the Tmutarakan Peninsula and settled in a deserted place, where he founded a monastery with a church in the name of the Most Holy Theotokos. The monk died at a ripe old age. He is also known as a chronicler.

People called this day Nikonov.

Traditions and rituals

Nikon’s day is connected with cleaning the house and garden. The peasants whitewashed the stoves, made the beds, replaced the straw in the mattresses, and took out the trash. To wash tables, benches, floors, a decoction of mint is often used. After cleaning, it is customary to take a shower.

In the gardens in Nikon, they began to plant trees and shrubs, and also called birds – protectors from pests.
