Contemporary decor values simplicity, but also subtle sophistication, comfort and functionality. It presents a minimalist aesthetic, highlighting more space and less objects. In addition, it is constantly changing, as it uses ideas and trends that are on the rise.
Architect and urban planner Marina Belotto explains that, in contemporary style, everything changes very quickly and there are not many rules. “This is linked to the low durability of things, with technology. This allows you to live more fluidly, there is permission for everything, ”she points out.
Main features
By following the current decoration contemporary is always in transformation. Currently, it values simplicity, a cleaner and minimalist environment, the use of neutral tones (with some touches of brighter colors), smooth surfaces, lines and geometric shapes, open and free spaces. In short, in this style, less is always more.
Discover the main elements of contemporary decor:
Geometric shapes and straight lines
The use of geometric shapes and, more specifically, straight lines is one of the most striking features of contemporary decor. They manage to give a lot of personality to the environment. They are present in different ways: in furniture, in decorative items, in doors and windows, etc.
Colors

The contemporary style values the use of colors neutral, such as white, gray, black, beige and brown. Interior designer Larissa Santo recommends using these tones on walls and larger furniture. Brighter colors, such as yellow, orange, red and eggplant, can also be used in environments, but it is suggested to apply them in details, such as decorative objects, pictures, rugs and pillows.
“In contemporary decoration, we seek this, to stand out, without exaggerating or confusing. This generates clean, comfortable and friendly spaces in our eyes”, adds architect and urban planner Francesco Torrisi.
Lighting

Contemporary decor also values well-lit environments, either naturally or artificially. According to Larissa Santo, for keeping up with the most up-to-date information, the lighting in this style gains countless possibilitiessuch as lighting embedded in the ceiling or visible, use of panels, spots, plafons, LED profiles, among many others.
“Everything will depend on the environment and the feeling you want to have in the space. But one of the biggest secrets of good lighting is also making the circuits separate. That way, you create whatever atmosphere you want,” she reveals.
Furniture

The furniture usually has a simpler design, with straight and geometric lines. “As for tones, we should look for solid finishes, natural materials and unadorned surfaces”, advises architect and urban planner Francesco Torrisi.
For Marina Belotto, the choice of furniture will depend a lot on the personality of the resident. The architect and urban planner explains that contemporary style ranges from “simple lines, such as minimalism, to furniture that brings social criticism, as is the case of the Campana Brothers [referência em design de mobiliário brasileiro]which show that the furniture will be a work of art and a landmark within the space”.
Materials
The materials, as Marina Belotto explains, are related to technology, and the choice is made based on the resident’s lifestyle. Thus, it is possible to use wood, polished coatings, glass, metals, marble, among others.
“As the tones are mostly neutral, we must compose the environment with different textures: some smooth surfaces next to wood or more rustic ones, like stones. This will provide more warmth and visual comfort to the environment”, adds the architect and urban planner Francesco Torrisi. Polished surfaces are also highlighted in this style. However, interior designer Larissa Santo warns that it must be used with caution, due to the high reflection rate, which can be uncomfortable.
Decorative objects

In contemporary decoration, there is no rule that determines the objects for decoration. The important thing is to think about the amount and how they will be used. “From a neutral base, on most surfaces in the space in contemporary decor, objects will gain prominence and, therefore, it is important not to overdo it”, justifies Francesco Torrisi. Also, they need to be pieces that make sense to you.
“It is always good to reflect [sobre] why a certain object is important to you. The composition of objects in a space that is contemporary part of everything that comes from the subject”, clarifies the architect and urban planner Marina Belotto.
