On this day, the Orthodox Church honors the memory of Gerasim of Jordan. He was a Christian monk who lived in the fifth century in Lycia.

He was born into a wealthy family, but left worldly pursuits and became a hermit. The future saint lived in the desert of Egypt, but later came to the banks of the Jordan River, where he founded a monastery. The story of how Gerasim tamed a wild lion, healing the animal from wounds, is famous in the world.

Traditions and rituals

Earlier in the day of Gerasim, rooks flew from the south. Interestingly, rooks usually fly at the same speed as the warm air front – about 50 kilometers per day.

It is believed that if the rooks, upon arrival, immediately begin to arrange their nests, then the spring will be quick and friendly. But if the birds, after sitting on the nests for a short time, leave again, the cold will last for several days.

Our ancestors used rooks as a kind of sowing calendar: if the birds are sitting in their nests, then in a week you can go out to the field.

In Gerasim, housewives baked rooks from the dough, treating children to them. The Rook, by the way, is considered a hardworking bird, so those born on his day are distinguished by hard work and thrift.

In addition, they believe that rooks have the ability to expel evil spirits from the house and yard. Therefore, a kikimora was plucked out of Gerasim. People did not want to put up with him, because he constantly fouled: either he knocked with a winder on the oven, then he messed up the yarn, then he beat the pots, then he rattled the dishes. To appease evil spirits, they invited a healer to the house, who examined all the corners of the hut, swept the stove and read conspiracies. Kikimora can only return home in the fall, after the rooks have flown to warmer climates.
