It was in Brazil that the biggest apparition of registered flying objects, until today, at a single time. The episode became known as the “Night of the flying saucers”, when 21 UFOs were seen in São Paulo, Minas Gerais, Goiás and Rio de Janeiro.
On the night of Monday, May 19, 1986, the Air Defense Operations Center (CODA) deployed five Brazilian Air Force (FAB) fighter jets to pursue the objects. The UFOs were picked up by the radars of the Integrated Center for Air Defense and Air Traffic Control (Cindacta) and seen by several civilian and military witnesses.
Pilot reports say that objects could reach the speed of up to 15 times the speed of sound, perform maneuvers, fly in a zigzag, change color, hover static, make curves at right angles, and some of them were up to 100 meters in diameter. .
Largest case ever recorded in the world
Four years before the “Night of the UFOs”, Brazil had already been the scene of the greatest historical case of ufology: on the night of March 6, 1982, the Pedro Pedrossian stadium (also called Morenão), in Campo Grande, Mato Grosso. do Sul, had approximately 23,500 people watching the game between the local team Operário against Vasco (RJ). Players and fans witnessed a cylindrical object emitting lights as it flew silently over the stadium.
Brazilian military
In an interview with the Alesp Conecta Program, ufologist Ademar Gevaerd highlights that Brazil was the first country in the world where the military admitted the existence of UFOs of non-terrestrial origin. “That happened in 1954. From that year for here, the Brazilian Air Force has officially investigated flying saucers at least four times. It is a much higher proportion than people are generally aware of.”
Who controls access to information?
In the same interview, Gevaerd explains that information about cases of UFO sightings is kept and controlled by the Air Forces of each country. In Brazil, the Air Force made part of its documents available at the National Archive.
There are about 20,000 official pages that can be accessed by anyone. Among them are part of the documents of Operation Prato, carried out by the military in 1977, which has more than 500 photographs and more than 16 hours of recording with images of flying saucers flying over the Amazon.
To skeptics who question “what is the real evidence that there is life off planet?”, Gevaerd points out: “Look, there are only 20,000 pages of documents from the Brazilian Air Force proving the research carried out”, referring to the available material.
