The artistic director and activist of the anti-fatphobia movements Ale Monteiro commented on the controversy regarding the influencer’s post Thais Carla which went viral on social media in recent days.
It all started when the influencer reposted photos of when she fantasized about “Globeleza”, in 2020. From then on, comments and fake news began to circulate that she would be the new muse of the real Globo Carnival. Then, Thais received a rain of prejudiced comments, among them, the deputy Nikolas Ferreiras (PL-MG).
Ale spoke about the dictatorship of perfect carnival bodies and criticized the lack of representation in the main carnival parties.
“There is a devotion to the culture of perfect bodies at Carnival. There is no denying that this idea that I repressed and hurt so many people is rooted, like Thais Carla, me and so many other people. I see that this was a perfect moment for the companies involved in the carnival to elevate fat people as highlights. Because Thaís Carla is not the new Globobeleza, but she could be and that should not be a reason for surprise or criticism”he pointed out.
A brief survey of the main muses and highlights in samba schools, cabins and carnival balls proves that there is this standardization of bodies.
“You just have to take a look at who are the highlights in the main samba schools, cabins, dances and carnival parties and you will notice that there is a pattern, and that they do not contemplate fat women and men. That is, we urgently need to break this. You can’t accept that this is it and that’s it. Carnival needs to be a party for everyone”, he said.
Last year, Thais lamented the persecution on social networks of people who offended her only because of her weight. “It only increased (the number of haters). The more you grow and are happy, the more you bother people. They don’t want to accept They don’t want to accept that you are happy with your own body. They want you to always be molding yourself to things that do not exist. There is no one perfect. My happiness and my way of being creates questions in people’s minds and, sometimes, generates anger”she said.
