Dressage is an educational process that aims to improve communication between the dog and the tutor. According to Manara Martins, trainer and founder of Alternativa Pet Adestramento, techniques are used that teach the animal to “associate commands, gestures and markers with the behaviors that we want to model and execute”.
In it, the puppy learns, for example, to perform tasks, to respect limits and to obey the tutor. “O training it is carried out not only to work on behavior problems, but also to teach the dog how we humans would like it to behave in different situations”, says Camila Hermes, veterinarian and trainer.
How to start training?
If you want to teach some basic commands to your animal, know that it is possible. According to Manara Martins, in the beginning, it is important “the dog is interested in the reward and focused on what the tutor has to offer”. Therefore, she explains that it is essential to know the animal and understand what works for him as a reward, as it is something that will motivate him.
types of rewards
For some dogs, according to the trainer, using reinforcements or positive rewards, such as treats or a portion of food, works very well in the beginning to obtain desired behaviors. In the case of more agitated dogs that like to playit is indicated “reward with a toy, throw the ball or shake the tug of war rope”.
Gestural and verbal commands
Another tip from the trainer is to associate gestural and verbal commands during the training. “Repeat [os gestos] several times and do several sessions rewarding the dog until he starts offering the behavior spontaneously, without needing the reward”, he guides.
