Italian Filippo Bernardini admitted to stealing over 1,000 unpublished manuscripts. He has tricked them with various writers, including Margaret Atwood, Ian McEwan and Sally Rooney. This was reported by The Guardian.
It was learned that the swindler had been known in literary circles for several years, but he was arrested only now.
Bernardini worked for Simon & Schuster. He sent emails to writers from fake accounts using the domain names of real publishers, changing some characters. In total, he has more than 160 of these e-mail boxes.
So, the writers and their representatives believed the fraudster, sent him materials by e-mail.

Interestingly, Bernardini’s motives are unknown, because he never asked for money from the authors as a ransom, and the stolen texts were not posted anywhere.
The fraudster agreed to pay compensation in the amount of $88,000. Also, under US law, he faces up to 20 years in prison for the juice.
