Georgia’s two Republican candidates spent nearly half of the debate debating false allegations of election fraud in 2020, showing how former President Donald Trump continues to lie to lawmakers about his defeat.
“Let me speak very clearly tonight: the 2020 election was rigged and stolen,” former Georgia Senator David Perdio said in his opening speech. Perdius, who lost the second round of elections to Democratic Senator John Osoff in January 2021, is backed by Trump.
Perry is protesting incumbent Governor Brian Kemp, who passed legislation last year that violated the right to vote and gave more control to GOP -nominated members in elections. The primary winner on May 23 will face Democratic candidate Stacey Abrams in November.
In the first 23 minutes of the one-hour debate on Sunday night, Kemp and Perdue repeatedly shouted and talked, almost exclusively focusing on false allegations that the 2020 election was stolen.

The current president has repeatedly cited Perdus ’defeat against Osop, arguing that it proves he won’t be able to defeat Abrams in 2022.
“You have a candidate attacking my record, unfortunately, tonight, because they don’t have a record to beat John Ossoff in 2020,” Kemp said.
Conservative Kemp won the 2018 parliamentary primary and the general election for governor of Georgia in support of Trump, but refused to accept Trump’s requests to call a special session of the Georgian legislature to cancel the election results in 2020.
