RALEIGH, NC (AP) – Leslie McCray Dooley Jr., a key player in the North Carolina state investigation into an election fraud investigation that led to the Congressional election, has died.
Her daughter, Andrea Daulle Heverley, wrote that her father “died peacefully” Sunday morning, according to a social media post. She was diagnosed with advanced lung cancer and died at her daughter’s home in Bleden County, her friend Jay Delaney told The Associated Press in a brief interview. Doules is 60 years old.

Witnesses told state officials that Dowls, with the help of his assistants, collected hundreds of absentee votes from Bleden County in 2018. These workers testified that they were approached to collect blank or incomplete ballots, falsify signatures on them and even gather scores for local candidates.
The results of the 2018 general election for the 9th congressional district have finally been canceled and a new ballot for the seat has been designated by the State Election Council, following an investigation.
Dowls worked on the 2018 congressional run for then -Republican candidate Mark Harris. No lawsuit was filed against Harris, who did not run in the by-election.
Daulles was subsequently charged with allegations related to the 2016 elections and 2018 primary.
Dowless’s health became an issue when he received six months in prison for violations related to federal usury, which is directly related to a larger state investigation.
Dales’ federal prosecutor filed another motion in March calling for the stamp “for the inclusion of sensitive health information.” The prison office did not say Daules was in custody.
Dowless state and federal attorneys did not immediately respond to an email requesting comment. But after Dowls ’death, the case of absentee voting against him is now controversial.
Wake County District Attorney Lorraine Freeman said the legal delays caused by COVID-19 contributed to the inability to sue prior to Dales’ trial.
Expressing condolences for the Dowles family, Freeman said Sunday that his office will continue to prosecute the other defendants even if Dowles is considered the head of the investigation.
“All other cases are based in part on the view of the status of his master plan and coordination,” Freeman told the AP. He said each individual case will be reviewed before deciding how to proceed.
Delaney, who saw Dowls last week, said “Dowls wants the opportunity to defend himself against the state charges” and denied the plea deal “in the hope that he will be tried in court today.”
Dowls was “a man who quickly trusted and loved others through his ministry,” Delaney said in a text message.
Dowls pleaded guilty in federal court to obtaining illegal social security benefits in June last year while withholding taxes for his political activities.
