In alarming new statistics, guns were found to be the leading cause of death for children and teens in the United States in 2020, the first to succeed in traffic accidents, drug overdoses and cancer, according to in a new study.
From 2019 to 2020, the total number of deaths caused by guns in the United States increased by 13.5%. But the mortality rate between the ages of 1 and 19 – 4,300 people – rose 29.5 percent. Research Letter Published earlier this week in the New England Journal of Medicine.
Although suicide contributed to that number, homicides accounted for the largest share of gun-related deaths, according to the data.
Guns are the leading cause of death among children and adolescents today.

The study explored for decades Mortality Data Center for Disease Control and Prevention for Children.
“The increase in the death rate from firearms reflects a long-term trend and shows that we continue to fail to protect our youth from preventative causes of death,” the letter wrote.
“In the past 40 years or so, this is the first case of gunshot wounds. ‘It’s Better Than Child Traffic Accidents,’ said Jason Goldstick, co-author of the letter, associate research professor at the University of Michigan.
The number of car-related deaths that have been the leading cause of death of children and adolescents has dropped dramatically in the United States over the past 20 years, probably due to improved vehicle safety. Approximately 3,900 Americans between the ages of 1 and 19 died in a car accident in 2020.
From 2019 to 2020, gun deaths increased per 100,000 population among men and women, and according to ethnic demographics, 2019-2020, the largest increase among black Americans, the researchers found.
