Like the second uterus transplant that was recently performed at the Foch Hospital in Suresnes, France, every successful transplant announcement strengthens the hope of hundreds of thousands of women around the world. It is estimated that one in 500 girls are born with Rokitansky Syndrome (MRKH), which deprives her of a uterus and therefore renders her sterile. Added to that are those who had to perform a hysterectomy as a result of cancer or bleeding during childbirth. That is about 200 thousand women of reproductive age in Europe.
To date, around 100 uterus transplants have been performed worldwide. France claims two, the first of which, also held at Foch Hospital, saw a young woman named Deborah give birth in February 2021.
