LOS ANGELES (AP)-Oprah Winfrey and the Smithsonian Channel are working together to highlight racial inequality in the health care system through a new campaign and a new documentary.
On Thursday, the network launched a color care campaign to create a health equality solution. The campaign will be followed by the premiere of Winfrey’s documentary “The Color of Care,” which will be released on May 1.
Through Harpo Productions, Winfrey will make a documentary about how people of color systematically suffer from poor health care in the United States and the COVID-19 pandemic is a catalyst for shedding light on this problem.
The documentary will coincide with a campaign that includes a broader discussion on the topic. The one-year campaign will include several activations in the coming months, including digital series. It will bring together affected communities, medical and nursing schools, health care professionals and policy makers in hopes of addressing inequality.
“The COVID crisis has revealed a serious inequality in our health system that, if left unchecked, will still have a disproportionate impact on people of color during the next health care period,” he said. James Blue III, head of the Smithsonian Institution. “This campaign will work to eliminate this inequality.”
