Many viruses thrive in our ecosystem. Some are pathogenic and cause disease, others are harmless. Very often pathogenic viruses were not always pathogenic. There is no need for manipulation in the ultra-secure P4 laboratory to develop the virus. this ability to infect its host is usually acquired naturally during its evolutionary history. New work by teams from the University of Oxford and the Louis-Maximilians-University of Munich in the journal Science , tell us, for example, the very instructive story of the chicken virus, MDV. In just a few generations, this benign virus evolved into a formidable pathogen, causing Marek’s disease, one of the most serious avian influenza pathologies recorded on our farms. Although vaccination has been widely used for forty years, this virus continues to circulate with significant economic impact worldwide.
