Cancer screening. The rise of 3D mammography faces organizational issues

In March 2023, the Health Authority (HAS) recommended the introduction of 3D mammography into organized breast cancer screening. The first in the world. no country currently uses this technology as part of a screening program.

While traditional mammography turns the breast into a flat 2D object that can mask tumors or make people mistakenly believe a mass is present, tomosynthesis reconstructs a 3D image of the breast from views obtained under different slices. “This different way of examining the breast allows for a better view, especially in dense breasts, and therefore gives better results than a standard mammogram.” comments Dr: Luc Seunart, President of the French Society of Senology and Breast Pathology
