Osteoarthritis is a progressive, degenerative and inflammatory joint disease that affects more than 240 million people worldwide. It is associated with increased mortality and a number of comorbidities, pain leads to depression, functional disability and sick leave. This debilitating disease imposes a heavy burden not only on patients, by reducing their quality of life and independence, but also on national health systems and public finances, by the socio-economic costs of the pathology.
