More than 6,000 young people under the age of 25 die every year in France, including about 3,000 before they turn one year old. Among them are children with cancer, but also with birth defects, metabolic and neurological diseases or multiple disabilities. Chronic incurable diseases that, like adults, require access to palliative care. However, there are no dedicated pediatric palliative care units or beds. Currently support is based on 23 Regional Pediatric Palliative Care Resource Teams (ERRSPP) established in 2011.
“France is lagging behind. we’ve surveyed other ERRSPPs and we estimate that around 30% of children who need it currently have access to palliative care.” I’m sorry Dr: Mathias Schell, a pediatrician specializing in oncology, who leads the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes resource team called Espera. He also points to the lack of resources in existing teams.
