The numbers are unequivocal: cocaine is becoming commonplace in France. Earlier this week, French public health warned of a sharp increase in consumption and poisoning over several years. The French Observatory on Drugs and Addiction (OFDT) counted 23,335 cocaine-related emergency visits between 2010 and 2022, a threefold increase over a decade, the report said.
Emergency room visits primarily affect men (75%) and young adults, which is consistent with the consumer profile. Patients are admitted mainly for intoxication (65%), dependence (13%) or withdrawal (7.5%). The evolution is more pronounced in women (from 4.5 to 12.6 per 100,000 sections, compared to 12 to 29.2 in men). Cocaine was involved in 12% of emergency room visits related to drug use in 2019, compared to 7% in 2015, according to data from the Organization for Coordinated Surveillance of Emergency Situations (Oscour) Network.
