Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson (D) warned on Friday what the 2022 mid-term elections mean for the future of democracy in America.
Nicole Wallace, host of MSNBC’s “Deadline: White House,” said Benson is “the kind of person” former President Donald Trump wants to replace who could possibly cancel the 2024 election if he or other Republicans are don’t get a vote. . street.
Benson, who was elected Michigan’s top election official in 2018, has been intimidated by Trump supporters since the 2020 election amid a futile attempt to overthrow President Joe Biden’s victory.
“You’re not exactly the kind of person, but specifically in Michigan, that Donald Trump wants to change next. What warnings do you have about 2024?” Wallace asked Benson.
“This will decide in 2022 whether we will have democracy in 2024,” Benson said.
“Our ability to defend and defend democracy in 2020 is highly dependent on honest people defending the will of the people, refusing when the president called and said‘ win the votes ’and prove the election despite the threats and intimidation. “Violence and challenges associated with this certification process,” he said.
The interim period of 2022 is “when voters decide who the players will be in 2024,” he continued. So it’s “an opportunity for us to pick champions of democracy and to push back conspiracy theories that clearly disapprove of elections they don’t approve of.”
Benson expressed hope that voters would “make the right choice”.
“From now until election day, we have the opportunity to reach out to voters in states like Michigan, Georgia, Arizona and Nevada where democracy is at the forefront,” he concludes. “Their vote this year will determine his future.”
