The researchers did notice a progression of atherosclerotic plaques (lipid deposits on the inner surface of the arteries), which was more important in men who did very intense exercise.
To reach this conclusion, they compared the “calcium score” of 300 amateur athletes, with an average age of 54, as well as the intensity of their sports activities, at six-year intervals.
