After years of a strict “zero Covid” strategy, Beijing has loosened its grip on the virus and is facing a very severe outbreak across the country.
Officially, the country has only known 5,267 deaths from Covid-19 since the start of the epidemic in 2020, and has announced just 20 deaths since the easing of control measures on December 7. But the many celebrity deaths and images of overwhelmed hospitals reported by the international press suggest that the situation is actually dire, and that the human toll is necessarily much heavier.
