Prince Harry said it was “terrifying” that his brother Prince William “shouted and screamed” at him when he tried to leave the royal family.
He was referring to a January 13, 2020, meeting at Sandringham where Harry, William, then-Prince Charles and the Queen all tried to steer the Sussexes out of the firm.
In the latest installment of his Netflix series Harry & Meghan, the Duke of Sussex explained: “I went in with the same offer that I had already made public, but once I got there I was given five options: one was all in, no . change, five are all out.
“I took option three during the meeting: half in, half out. We have our jobs, but we also work in support of the Queen.
“It became very clear, very quickly, that the goal was not up for discussion or debate. It was scary to have my brother yell and scream at me and my dad saying things that just weren’t true.
“And my grandmother, you know, just sits there quietly and takes it all in.
“But you have to understand that from the family’s point of view, especially from his point of view, there are ways of doing things, and his ultimate mission, purpose/responsibility is the institution.”
Harry and Meghan decided to leave the royal family in 2020 and have since spoken about their rift with the royal family.
During the documentary, Harry also spoke about his fractured relationship with his older brother, now the Prince of Wales and first in line to the throne.
The Duke of Sussex said: “I mean the saddest part was this area between my brother and I, so he is now on the side of the establishment.
“And I get, some of what I get. I understand right? This is his legacy, so to some extent it is already ingrained in him that part of his responsibility is the survival and continuation of this institution.”
Harry also said a joint statement was released without his permission on behalf of himself and his brother on the same day as the Sandringham summit, denying a story that William had bullied him from the royal family.
The Duke explained: “I couldn’t believe it. No one had asked me. No one asked my permission to put my name on such a statement. I called M and told her and she burst into tears because within four hours they were happy to lie to protect my brother and yet for three years they were never willing to tell the truth to save us protect”.
Harry continued, “There was no other option at this point. I said, we have to leave here”.
Both Meghan and Harry used the documentary to explain how media intrusion (and the Palace’s response) led them to leave the Studio.
He said: “I have 30 years’ experience of looking behind the scenes and seeing how the system works and how it works. Just constant information, about other family members, about favors inviting the press.”
Harry also explained that this resulted in the various royal offices “working against each other”.
“It’s a dirty game,” said the Duke of Sussex. “There are leaks, but there is also the implantation of the story. So if the comms team wants to be able to remove a negative story about their lead, they’ll trade and give you something about someone else’s lead.
“So the offices end up working against each other. It’s some kind of strange understanding or acceptance that happens.”
